Warner Bros. Games today announced its acquisition of Player First Games, known as the developer of the free-to-play platform fighting game MultiVersus.
According to Warner Bros. Discovery, developer Player First Games will still be led by its co-founders, Tony Huynh, who is the head of Player First Games, and Chris White, who is the head of technology. They will now report to Carlos Barbosa, the vice president and studio head of Warner Bros. Games San Diego.
“We have worked with Player First Games over several years to create and launch ‘MultiVersus,’ and we are very pleased to welcome this talented team to Warner Bros. Games,” company president David Haddad told IGN. “The bright and creative team at Player First Games adds to our extensive development capabilities.”
Meanwhile, Huynh said, “Our team is excited to join the Warner Bros. Games family, and we feel that this will be great for MultiVersus overall. We are working to make the MultiVersus game experience the best it can be, and having our development team integrated with the publisher is optimum for the players.”
This latest acquisition comes after months of layoffs and closure of studios in the gaming industry.
MultiVersus had seen success when its open beta version made its debut in July 2022 on platforms such as Steam, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Epic Games Store. Its success continued in the months of August and September reaching 20 million users. However, the lack of updates and introduction of new characters seemed to have led to a significant drop in the number of users in February 2023. The open beta ended on June 25, 2023, and was relaunched nine months later in May 2024.
