Via its recent earning reports, Square Enix announced it will switch to a multiplatform strategy for its main titles, ending the PlayStation exclusivity the game developer has had with Sony since the release of Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation 1 in 1997.
“For HD titles, the Group will aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs. Especially, in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles, it will build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles,” says the report.
The company released Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth only on PS5. However, releasing major titles for one console has limited the company’s profits. In addition, some fans were disappointed about FFXVI for lack of diversity and other issues.
Unlike Square Enix, many developers such as EA, Ubisoft, Activision, and Take Two Interactive take most of their major titles to more than one platform, including PC and mobile.
Square Enix mentioned that it will focus on quality instead of quantity. “The Group will pursue a shift from quantity to quality as its medium- to long-term philosophy regarding the DE segment’s portfolio. To that end, it will first work to establish the optimal portfolio, striking a balance between a “product-out” approach that reflects the imaginations of its employees to the utmost, and a “market-in” approach that leverages customers’ voices and data to inform development efforts.”
In addition, profits were almost down 70% when compared to the previous financial year. The losses are related to the cancellation of projects. The company has cancelled games that do not fit into the new strategy.
Also, layoffs are expected at SE, according to Andy Robinson at Video Games Chronicles. Sources said SE President Takashi Kiryu delivered the news about the layoffs today. Employees in publishing, IT, and SE Indie Collective are affected in the US and Europe. Affected employees in the US may no longer be at the company starting in June. Meanwhile, employees in the UK will gain advantages from the mandatory one-month consultation period required by law.
Takashi Kiryu replaced former SE president Yosuke Matsuda in March 2023.
