The official Dragon Ball website and social media accounts announced today the passing of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. According to statements, Toriyama-san passed away due to an acute subdural hematoma on March 1st, 2024. He was 68.
Toriyama was born on April 5, 1955, in Nagoya, Japan. As a young man, he wanted to become a manga creator. He caught the attention of many people after entering an amateur manga creator contest done by Weekly Shonen Magazine.
Toriyama became known in Japan for his Dr. Slump manga in 1980 and Dragon Ball in 1984.
The Dragon Ball franchise became a worldwide phenomenon. The manga, anime and videogames have been translated into many languages, and has millions of fans around the world.
Dragon Ball also became a model for other anime that follow such as Bleach, Naruto and One Piece. Toriyama’s art style was also seen on Dragon Quest RPG franchise.
Toriyama was involved in the upcoming Dragon Ball spin-off series Dragon Ball Daima coming later this year and on Sand Land, a game based on a manga which made its debut in 2000.

It’s our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve.
However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world.
Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akira Toriyama’s unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.

Funeral service was held with his family and very few relatives. Following his wishes for tranquility, we respectfully inform you that we would not accept flowers, condolences gifts, visiting, offerings and others. Also, we ask you to refrain from conducting interviews with his family.
Future plan for commemorate gathering is not decided, we will let you know when it’s confirmed.
