Catan game creator Klaus Teuber passes away

German board game designer Klaus Teuber, known for his creation of the game Catan, passed away on April 1, 2023, at the age of 70.

“The Teuber family announces with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that their beloved husband and father has passed away at the age of 70 on April 1, 2023, after a brief and severe illness,” says a post on the game’s website.

“At this time, the Teuber family respectfully requests the chance to bid farewell to their loved one in private and to be allowed the space they need to grieve.”

Four of his game creations won the Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) board and card game awards in his native country, including Barbarossa, Adel Verpflichtet, Drunter und Drüber, amd The Settlers of Catan (later renamed simply Catan).

Teuber started working on Die Siedler von Catan (The Settlers of Catan) in 1992. The game made its debut in 1995.
