MultiVersus, the multiplayer platform-fighting game developed by Player First Games and Warner Bros, is about to be removed from digital stores on April 4th and will no longer be playable starting in June.
In an update on the game’s website, CEO and co-founder Tony Huynh announced that the developers will pause updates and take the game offline temporarily for the purpose of a relaunch targeted for early 2024. This marks the first official update since November, and players have been left largely behind since then. The update will focus on new characters, maps, and modes, as well as updated netcode and matchmaking improvements.
Though the game had a successful launch, the number of MultiVersus players using Steam decreased tremendously months later. The last game update happened in November 2022 with the arrival of Marvin the Martian, and the game’s popularity decreased on Steam from 153,433 users on July 27, 2022, to simply 296 users on February 14, 2023.
As a result, the game will be taken offline on June 25th, 2023, and MultiVersus players will only have access to the game’s offline modes during the interim period. Huynh acknowledges that there is still much work to be done to improve the game and create more ways for players to enjoy it, and the developers are looking at new ways for players to connect with friends in-game.
“To do this the right way, we will be closing the MultiVersus Open Beta on June 25, 2023. As part of this process, we’ll be pausing updates and taking the game offline as we prepare for the launch of MultiVersus, which we are targeting for early 2024.”
