Jason David Frank, actor and martial artist who played the role of Tommy Oliver in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, has died at the age of 49.
The actor’s representative, Justine Hunt, said Frank passed away but did not mention the cause of death. Sources told TMZ the cause was suicide.
Even after his presence in the original seasons of MMPR as the Green Ranger, he returned for various seasons in Wild Force, Dino Thunder, Ninja Steel and others, becoming the favorite Ranger for many fans.
“He was an inspiration to so many people. His presence will be dearly missed. It’s so sad to lose another member of our Ranger family,” Walter Jones, the original Black Ranger told TMZ.
He continued, “Jason was one of the biggest pranksters on the show. He had a wild sense of humor. We had our shares of ups and downs but I stayed consistent about being an ear if he needed one. My prayers go out to his family and all that will miss him.”
“Can’t believe it…. RIP Jason David Frank🙏🏾. My heart is sad to have lost another member of our special family,” wrote Jones on Instagram. Frank is the second MMPR member who passes away after the death of Thuy Trang, the original Yellow Ranger, in 2001.
Other Rangers shared their feelings:
“Please respect the privacy of his family and friends during this horrible time as we come to terms with the loss of such a wonderful human being,” Huntol told TMZ. “He loved his family, friends and fans very much. He will truly be missed.”
RIP Jason.
P.S. He came to Central Florida comic book and anime conventions and gave hundreds of fans some martial arts lessons.
