According to Deadline, Lionsgate has acquired the film adaptation of the Sega franchise Streets of Rage from John Wick creator Derek Kolstad.
Kolstad is writing the script. He is also producing the film alongside Toru Nakahara (film producer for live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films). Joining Kolstad and Nakahara in production will be dj2 Entertainment’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson and Dan Jevons; and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Tony Shaw.
For those who may not be familiar with the popular franchise, Sega released three Street of Rage games for the Sega Genesis from 1991 to 1994. Fans had to wait until 2020 to see the return of the franchise with Streets of Rage 4 thanks to Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games. The franchise is known in Japan as Bare Knuckle.
In charge of managing the upcoming live-action film based on the side-scrolling beat’em up game will be Brady Fujikawa and Jon Humphrey for Liosngate alongside Shuji Utsumi and Nakahara on behalf of Sega, Jonhson for dj2 Entertainment, and Shaw for Escape Artists.
“Lionsgate is one of the most dynamic studios in the entertainment industry today. We look forward to working with them, Derek and our all-star producers to bring this compelling IP to life,” said Nakahara.
