According to a report by Stars and Stripes, Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi died while trying to assist in saving the lives of three people who had become entangled in a rip current.
The incident occurred on July 4 in a diving location near Okinawa.
Major Robert Bourgeau of the 10th Support Group at Torii Station saw a mother in need of assistance for her 11-year-old daughter and a US soldier.
The two had supposedly been snorkeling around 100 meters from the coast when they got caught in a rip current.
In an effort to save the girl and her mother, who had also been swept away by the river, Bourgeau maneuvered through shallow water with one of his scuba students. He was able to rescue both the girl and the mother. The soldier was eventually able to swim to shore on his own.
Takahashi had gone into the sea to help with the rescue. Bourgeau claimed that although his students saw the Yu-Gi-Oh! creator several times before he disappeared under the sea, he did not.
A Japan Coast Guard spokeswoman informed Stars and Stripes that Takahashi’s body was discovered two days later, approximately 1,000 feet offshore in Awa, Nago City.
“He’s a hero,” Bourgeau said. “He died trying to save someone else.”
