A Streets of Rage film adaptation is in the works by the production company behind Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sources told Deadline dj2 Entertainment will be in charge of producing a film based on another Sega franchise alongside Escape Artists. The creator of the John Wick franchise, Derek Kolstad, has already written the script for the movie.
For people not familiar with the fighting game franchise, Sega’s Street of Rage (aka Bare Knuckle – ベアナックル 怒りの鉄拳 in Japan), made its debut in 1991 for the Sega Genesis gaming console.
The 2D side-scrolling game made its return with Streets of Rage 4 after 26 years, thanks to developers Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games and publisher Dotemu. Japanese game developer Ancient joined Sega for Streets of Rage 2 and 3 after Sega worked solo on the original.
The company has seen success with Sonic twice already. It is already producing a live-action TV series adaptation for Life Is Strange and Disco Elysium. It is working on other shows based on other game franchises such as It Takes Two and My Friend Pedro.
