Crystal Dynamics announced today it is working on the next Tomb Raider using the recently-launched Unreal Engine 5 developed by Epic Games. The announcement was made just before the end of the State of Unreal 2022 Keynote Presentation (archive).
UE5 will replace Crystal Games’ own Foundation game engine used with Tomb Raider (2013 reboot), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018).
In a video shared on Twitter, franchise general manager Dallas Dickinson mentioned the development of the next Tomb Raider has just started. He continued: “Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high quality cinematic, action-adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise.”
Unfortunately, Crystal Dynamics nor Square Enix shared any other piece of information. However, Crystal Dynamics announced last year it is working on unifying the franchise’s timelines.
Crystal Dynamics is incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level. That's why we're proud to announce that our next #tombraider game is being built on Unreal Engine 5! pic.twitter.com/UFMiWzJAZc
