During Pokémon Presents 2.27.2022, The Pokémon Company announced the next titles in the franchise: Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.
The reveal trailer introduces three new Pokémon: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly. The new region seems to be based on Spain because of the names of the three new Pokémon.
In the name Sprigatito, “gatito” means “(male) little cat” or “kitten” in Spanish. Meanwhile, in Fuecoco, “fue” comes from the word “fuego” (fire in Spanish), while the “coco” part of the word refers to “cocodrilo” (crocodile in Spanish).
For Quaxly, the Quax part of course refers to the duckling Pokémon. However, it may also be a reference to Don Quijote / Don Quixote, the main character of The Ingenious Gentleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha, a well-known Spanish novel written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and one of the most-translated works of literature worldwide. Is Fuecoco a reference to Sancho Panza (Don Quixote’s squire)? By the way, Panza means “belly.” Could Quaxly be Don Quixote?
Also, the Moorish architecture style of towns seen in Spain appears in the game.
The Pokémon Company stated Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will make their debut in late 2022.
“Various towns blend seamlessly into the wilderness with no borders. You’ll be able to see the Pokémon of this region in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets—all over! You’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series—battling against wild Pokémon in order to catch them—now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy.”
Fans can already check out the game’s site at https://scarletviolet.pokemon.com/ (archive).
The 13-minute presentation also announced software update 1.1.0 for Arceus will be available today. A new animated series will also make its debut later this year.
