Via social media, Nintendo announced this evening the discontinuation of the 3DS and Wii U eShop in late March 2023.
This discontinuation will not allow users to purchase titles nor to download demos.
However, users will still be able to re-download purchased games and DLC, download software updates and continue playing online.
After late March 2023, users won’t be able to purchase the following:
- On Nintendo 3DS, this includes paid content, plays and passes in software such as StreetPass Mii Plaza, Theme Shop, Nintendo Badge Arcade and Pokémon Bank. Only a few free themes from the Theme Shop will be available.
- On Wii U, this includes passes in software such as Wii Sports Club.
Other things users won’t be able to do are: download free-to-start software, redeem downloadable codes, and add funds via both devices to their eShop balance.
The discontinuation will take place in phases.
- As of May 23, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
- As of August 29, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a Nintendo eShop Card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. However, it will still be possible to redeem download codes until late March 2023.
My Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Memories page is already available. It gives statistics such as total play time, total titles played, most-played titles, favorite genres, and most memorable game. Fans can download images to share them on social media.
