Today, Niantic announced the close of its AR mobile game Harry Potter Wizards Unite on January 31, 2022.
Though it’s bad news for fans of the film franchise and those who enjoyed the game, Niantic announced changes for the game starting today, such as increase of rewards for all daily assignments and the more frequent appearance of spell energy and ingredients.
The company also laid out its plans for game events coming this month and in December.
The mobile game on the App Store, Google Play, and Galaxy Store, will be removed on December 6. On that day, fans won’t be able to re-download the game. Fans won’t be able to make in-game purchases as well.
Once the day arrives, “all features and servers for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be turned off,” says the game’s homepage. In other words, the game will not work. Also, the game’s community forum and its social media accounts will close the same day.
Niantic wanted to offer a game experience similar to the one in Pokémon Go, but it didn’t happen. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite only generated $40 million USD in revenue since release ($4.7 million USD in 2021). Meanwhile, Pokémon Go generated just $1.1 billion this year so far and $5.5 billion USD since its debut in 2016.
Updating story with these numbers from @SensorTower:
Harry Potter Wizards Unite has generated $40 million in revenue.
Pokemon Go has generated nearly $1.1 BILLION so far in 2021.
Basically, Wizards Unite was a real Hufflepu–ah, quit booing! https://t.co/djLa94tgdT
