A sealed copy of the 1985 NES title Super Mario Bros. game has been sold for $2 million USD, breaking a new world record in games collections, The New York Times reported earlier today.
This new record comes just a few weeks after the auctions of Super Mario 64 for $1.56 million USD and The Legend of Zelda for $870,000 USD, both via Heritage Auctions.
“A NEW WORLD RECORD on Rally w/ the $2,000,000 sale of our 1985 Super Mario Bros., marking the HIGHEST PRICE EVER PAID for a video game of any title,” collectibles website Rally announced on Twitter.

While more gamers are becoming familiar with Heritage Auctions, Rally is a completely different service.
In the case of Rally, the company makes purchases of collectible items and lets people “invest in shares of the individual items as they would a stock.”
When there is an offer, investors can decide with their vote “to sell and cash out their share of the profits, or to decline.”
Rally was able to purchase the NES game for $140,000 in 2020. Investors of that game also refused a $300,000 offer last year.
