As part of the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise, singer Katy Perry released her newest single Electric featuring Pikachu and Pichu.
Electric introduces Perry and Pikachu at a lighthouse in Hawaii. From there, they go back to their past where a young Perry is playing music next to Pichu in a small town farmer’s market. Both Perry and Pikachu change the life of the younger Perry by convincing her to attend a talent show at a vintage store. The video then shows Young Perry’s confidence to start singing. That moment would mark the start of her successful career. Confidence and perseverance is what the song is all about. “You’ve got the power now.”
“When I visited the Pokémon Café while touring Japan, I got so nostalgic. It took me back to my junior high years. So when I got the call to be a part of the 25th anniversary celebration alongside Post Malone and J Balvin, I was elated,” Perry said according to the Rolling Stone magazine. “The song’s themes — resilience, igniting your inner light — have guided my life and also parallel Pokémon’s story and characters. Pikachu is the evolved form of Pichu, so in the video, you see the younger version of me with Pichu and myself in the present day with Pikachu. We both evolve, yet retain a sense of playfulness.”
Raya and the Last Dragon film director Carlos Lopez Estrada was in charge of the video.
The first P25 concert took place in February, starring Post Malone. It was also revealed then that Latin singer J Balvin is also working on a song.
