According to TheWrap.com, Ángel Manuel Soto will direct Blue Beetle, DC Films’ first superhero movie featuring a Latino character.
The Puerto Rican director has recently worked on Charm City Kings, film that received the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020.
Sources also told TheWrap.com that Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will be in charge of the screenplay. He is known for writing the screenplay for the films Scarface (remake) and Miss Bala.
The Blue Beetle film will focus on Mexican-American teen Jaime Reyes, the third person to take on the identity of this superhero after characters Dan Garret (aka Dan Garrett) and Ted Kord.
“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” Soto told TheWrap. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
For fans not familiar with the third Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes and his two best friends discovered the original Blue Beetle scarab. After Reyes takes it home, the scarab merges with him during his sleep.
