Actress Javicia Leslie showed off her Batwoman costume as she takes the leading role replacing Ruby Rose in season two of The CW series.
According to a post on the DC Comics blog, Leslie’s role as Ryan Wilder doesn’t have much in common when compared to the original Batwoman in the TV series. “It’s clear that she has a different way of doing things than original Batwoman Kate Kane. She’s more untamed and less disciplined, and seems to possess a level of raw passion that we rarely saw in Kane.”
Though it seems like Leslie will be seen wearing the batsuit by Ruby Rose at the start of the season, she’ll be seen in action in her new costume in episode 3 of the new season.
“I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman—it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honor to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!,” said Leslie.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said in June when she got the role.
Leslie has been seen recently on the CBS drama series God Friended Me, as well as the lead role in the comedy film Always a Bridesmaid (seen on Netflix), among others.
Ryan Wilder is a brand-new character fans will learn more of in issue #50 of the Batgirl comic book coming out this week.
