Towards the end of its livestream at the Tokyo Game Show 2020 Online, Sega announced the upcoming “Virtua Fighter x esports” project.
Though the teaser video was mostly a recorded footage of previous VF game tournaments, the video ends with a picture of Akira Yuki, the main character of the game franchise.
Virtua Fighter, the first 3D fighting game franchise which debuted in 1993, “will be restarted as an esports title” to celebrate Sega’s 60th anniversary, says Sega.
The company did not release more info at its Sega Fan Meet-Up show, but it will keep fans up to date.
Will this Virtua Fighter game be Virtua Fighter 6? Or, will it restart the franchise like SNK did last year with Samurai Shodown (aka Samurai Spirits in Japan) and combine it with esports? It has been 10 years since Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown was released in Japanese arcades.
