According to the translations of an upcoming, leaked Famitsu article, Smash Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai said Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will the last DLC for the game, and that he is not sure about the future of the series, among other things.
Here are the main points of the article, according to Nintendo Everything, @bk2128, @PushDustIn, and Ryokutya2089.com:
- There won’t be any more fighters after the release of the newest characters in Fighters Pass Vol. 2, meaning the work on Smash Ultimate will be finished.
- Sakurai can’t choose who will be added into Smash Ultimate. Nintendo decided what characters will be included in this last DLC.
- He can accept requests from Nintendo’s proposals.
- Sakurai can refuse a character that doesn’t make sense, but doesn’t cancel one because he is stuck in game ideas.
- He can only work on the making of these fighters. In other words, he can’t work on anything else, not even on a new game he would direct by himself, but he is okay with that.
- Even though he doesn’t move according to his desires, such as wanting to make or direct a new game, Sakurai does want to keep working to make other people happy.
- Currently, Sakurai and Nintendo are not planning on any future Smash games for the series. Because of that, he doesn’t know what will happen to the series he created.
- Adding characters expands the game, so he’ll “give it his all for the last 6 fighters.”
“I can’t say that there is no possibility that the Smash Bros. series will continue,” Sakurai said. “I and the people in charge of Nintendo have no idea what the future will be.”

While working on Smash Ultimate, Sakurai can't work on anything else. It's coming to a point where Sakurai won't be able to direct any new game idea. But Sakurai is okay with that. Sakurai wants to keep working to make other people happy.

Sakurai and Nintendo aren't planning any future entries in the Smash series right now. So he doesn't know what will happen.
Adding content to this game little by little extends Smash Ultimate's life. So Sakurai plans to give it his all for the last 6 fighters.

Here are some additional quotes from the leaked excerpt of Sakurai's upcoming column:
'I can't say for sure if the Smash series will continue. The people at Nintendo who are in charge of the series and I are not thinking about the future at all'

'It's not really good for the long term future (of the series) to just add new content (To Ultimate). But by putting out a little bit at a time, we can make (Ultimate) last longer.'
