In an interview with US Gamer, Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov (Алексей Пажитнов) shared his feelings about the latest titles of the franchise, especially Tetris 99, and his thoughts about making Tetris an esport.
After mentioning how much he loves the Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pajitnov said he is absolutely excited about the one Tetris game on Switch.
“Tetris 99 is absolutely a great title,” he told US Gamer staff writer Nadia Oxford. “Basically, I think the one-player version of Tetris has been more or less stabilized over the years. That’s good, and we’re just adjusting the game to new user interfaces. But for two-player modes and serious competition, there are several challenges to overcome.”
“I really want Tetris to establish itself as an esport. We’re getting there very slowly but surely,” he added.
When it comes to other Tetris games, there are certain characteristics that attract him. Though he is not extremely happy about Tetris Effect, he has been impressed by the graphics of the game. He also calls Puyo Puyo “the only game that could pair with Tetris.” He was able to cooperate on the original Puyo Puyo with the design of the puzzle mode “maybe 20 years” ago.
