Sony has received a patent approved for a new PlayStation DualShock controller, according to Polygon. This new patent, seen on the World Intellectual Property Organization web site, shows a couple of changes when compared to a DualShock 4 controller.
First, it shows the presence of two back triggers in the controller. According to Polygon, “both back buttons can be activated with triggers in most of the proposed designs” and “they might move to other places.” Second, this model has no PS Home button.
The info seen on the patent does not say what game console this controller is designed for. Because this patent has been approved, it is not a guarantee that Sony will make this specific model.
The idea of back triggers has been seen before already in controllers made by SCUF for PS4 and Xbox One, for example. These two buttons seems to be programmable or customizable.
Sony is abut to release a DualShock 4 peripheral called the Back Button Attachment in late January 2020. It adds two programmable paddles to the back of a PS4 controller, along with an OLED screen.
Could this add-on be all that’s needed to make PS4 controllers compatible with the upcoming PlayStation 5?
