In order to preserve Adobe Flash content after its end of support in late 2020, Mark Welsh, author of Swivel (a Flash-to-video converter for Newgrounds) is working on an open-source program named Ruffle to emulate Flash animation in browsers.
According to a post on Newgrounds, a website with a history of fan-made fun animation, “Ruffle is being written in the Rust programming language and targets desktop and the web using Web Assembly.” Also, “there is even work being done to create a browser extension that detects old Flash embed code and swaps it with Ruffle, meaning you could visit any old website and the Flash will (eventually) just WORK.”
Currently, Newgrounds is changing the old Flash embed code on its site so that users won’t need a browser extension. However, the initial release of Ruffle “will cover animated content,” while later releases will be able “to cover more and more games.”
Interest fans of animation can check out https://ruffle.rs/ right now to try Flash content without the plugin. Try it even on your smartphone.
