For the very first time, tech giant Tencent and The Pokémon Company unite to develop games. As seen on the press release, no specific games were mentioned, but Tencent’s Timi Studio Group will develop an unannounced Pokémon game with the Japanese company.
Tencent had recently completed a deal with Nintendo, part owner of The Pokémon Company, to sell Switch consoles in mainland China. In China, most people enjoy using their smartphones to play mobile games than consoles to play at home.
The Chinese giant has become part of various companies that offer products and services, in the fields of social media, film production, video games, robotics, IT, streaming services, and many more. It currently holds stakes in more than 600 companies.
In video games, Tencent is no stranger to PC and smartphones games as it owns stakes in Ubisoft, Grinding Gear Games, Riot Games, Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, Supercell, Parados Interactive, Glu Mobile, and Miniclip. Though its name is not as familiar as Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony in the Americas, Europe and parts of Asia, Tencent may take this as another opportunity to take its own games outside of China while it helps Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to introduce its consoles and games to Chinese players.
