This morning, Nintendo introduced the Nintendo Switch Lite, a more-affordable alternative that will allow gamers to play Switch games in handheld mode only, aka on the go. At a suggested retail price of $199 in the US -the same as a high-end 3DS-, it will come in three different colors: yellow, gray and turquoise. A special light grey Pokémon Sword and Shield edition will arrive to stores starting November 8.
With this cheaper model, Nintendo expects more people to buy more Switch games but gamers should take notice of the features, or lack thereof.
The upcoming Switch Lite:
- weights less and has smaller dimensions and touchscreen than the original
- has more battery life
- cannot be connected to a TV, so it won’t come with a dock, HDMI cable or kickstand
- will feature Joy-Con controllers built-in, but won’t come with HD rumble nor IR sensors
- will have a directional pad instead of the directional buttons on the original Switch
- will come in three colors
- will need additional Joy-Con controllers to connect wirelessly to play games in tabletop mode
- will keep the portable 720p display resolution as the original
“Adding Nintendo Switch Lite to the lineup gives gamers more color and price point options,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America President. “Now consumers can choose the system that best suits how they like to play their favorite Nintendo Switch games.”
To make it easier to recognize which games will work with Switch Lite, Nintendo will add a list of compatible game modes on the back of game packages and in the Nintendo eShop digital store.
