HTC Vive General Manager Daniel O’Brien announced today the price of the upcoming HTC Vive Pro HMD (head mount display) at $799.
While the VR industry is slowly becoming more popular, HTC Vive is trying to make Virtual Reality reachable to more audiences and also satisfy first-adopters with new features who want more of the technology.
“With the Vive Pro we are delivering the best quality display and visual experience to the most discerning VR enthusiasts. Our goal has always been to offer the most premium VR platform available and to drive adoption for VR,” said Daniel O’Brien, HTC Vive General Manager, US. “By lowering the price of the current Vive, we are making VR more accessible while expanding the potential market for developers. Whether you’re a VR enthusiast or new to the platform, there’s never been a better time to join the most complete VR platform available.”
The HTC Vive Pro HMD will include the following: VR headset (attached), face cushion (attached), power adapter, DisplayPort cable, USB 3.0 cable, mounting pad, cleaning cloth, earphone hole cap x2, and documentation.
Interested customers will have to buy tracking stations and controllers if this is their first time using a Vive HMD. Newer tracking stations will let users connect up to four sensors.
Future owners of the Vive Pro will still need to purchase a Vive wireless adapter (based on Intel’s WiGig tech) to achieve that feeling of freedom, to be able to use their upgraded HMD without cables. However, existing Vive users can continue using their current-gen controllers and base stations. People who pre-order Vive Pro starting today can get a limited 6-month Viveport subscription.
For people who still want to get into VR, the original HMD costs $499 starting today, a $100 savings from its previous price in August of last year.
A Vive Pro HMD bundle, that will include not just the headset but other hardware, will be announced at a later date.
