Mario Kart 8 Deluxe becomes the fastest-selling title in franchise history

Nintendo announced earlier today that its Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch has become the fastest-selling title in franchise history, with more than 459,000 cartridges and downloads purchased in the U.S. on launch day.

The newest record brings Mario Kart Wii down to second place. Nintendo sold 433,900 copies of Mario Kart Wii during launch day in 2008.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has broken other records. According to Nintendo, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch has not just received many more perfect scores than other Mario Kart titles, it is also “the highest-rated game in the series in 15 years” with a Metacritic score of 93, getting the same overall score as Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the portable Game Boy Advance.
