Skydance Media has acquired the TV rights for Sword Art Online, the Japanese light novel written by Reki Kawahara. Since its launch in 2009 as a light novel and as an anime in 2012, the popularity of Kadokawa Corporation’s franchise has called the attention of many fans worldwide, with 22 books and more than 19 million copies sold worldwide, as well as two anime series, eight manga adaptations, five video games, and an upcoming animated film in 2017.
Skydance Media is on a fast-track to produce and launch the live-action TV series. Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island, Terminator Genisys) will be in charge of the plot for the series’ pilot episode; she will also be an executive producer along with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.
According to Skydance, Sword Art Online (SAO) “follow a brilliant young beta tester Kirito and his group of friends when they are trapped – alongside 10,000 other people – in a next-generation virtual reality online role-playing game. The game is a world unto itself: filled with sword fighting, monsters and mystery, where the stakes are life and death. Kirito and an ensemble of diverse characters must fight their way through this hostile environment while making lives for themselves in the fantastical world that is Sword Art Online.”
“I am excited and moved that Sword Art Online will be adapted into a live action series by the highly respected Skydance Media,” commented Reki Kawahara.
