Disney will discontinue its Disney Infinity line of games and toys, taking a $147 million charge to abandon the video game publishing business, the company announced.
It’s unfortunate for fans who got to like and enjoy Disney Infinity since 2013, but the company’s decision brings consequences. Now that Disney is leaving the console game industry due to “lower results” of Infinity, its internal developer Avalanche Studio is also shutting down, and cutting between 250 and 300 jobs.
Even after bringing Marvel and Star Wars characters to Infinity in this “toys-to-life” category where it has been competing with Activision’s Skylanders, Lego’s Dimensions and Nintendo’s Amiibo toys, Disney announced it missed its Wall Street earnings targets.
There are still two additional retail releases: Three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass this month and the Finding Dory Play Set next month.
With Disney abandoning the toys-to-life category, as well as console gaming, will this hurt other companies such as Activision & Nintendo?
