Dreamworks Animation announced Voltron: Legendary Defender is coming to Netflix on June 10. After 32 years, a new version of the 1984 classic animated series is coming online. During a panel last night at WonderCon hosted by Jessica Chobot, executive producers Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery showed fans the first trailer of the series.
The original series follows five pilots who control big lion robots and later fuse to control the giant robot known as Voltron. While this new version will be a lot like the original, with characters being introduced to Voltron for the very first time as cadets, it will include more humor, action, and character-driven storylines.
The official synopsis of the new 13-episode animated series is as follows: “Five unsuspecting teenagers, transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war, become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil. Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron: Legendary Defender.”
At the panel, the new voice-over team was introduced:
- Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time) as Lance
- Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow) as Pidge
- Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) as Shiro
- Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) as Hunk
- Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) as Keith
- Kimberly Brooks (Mass Effect) as Princess Allura
- Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) as Coran
The original Voltron anime, created by John Teichmann and Peter Keefe, was a mix of two anime Beast King Go Lion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV, with many changes in animation and story.
With previous success in the Nickelodeon series The Legend of Korra, will this be another success for Dos Santos and Montgomery? We’ll find out starting June 10.
