According to Kotaku, sources say Sony is working on a PlayStation 4.5 console that could make games run at 4K resolution, four times the quality of 1080p.
In conversations with developers that have been in contact with Sony, Kotaku says the device will come with “upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall.”
An enhanced GPU would bring more graphical power for developers to make use of to even compete with the likes of games with the arrivals of Oculus Rift hat works with very powerful PCs. Is virtual reality a reason for Sony to upgrade the PS4?
If the release of the “PS4.5” (as developers call it), indeed happens, it would create a fragmentation of software. A source did say the PS4.5 “may not even be released this year.”
Because of that, these questions come to mind: Will current PS4 owners be able to upgrade their consoles, or would they have to trade it? How much would the PS4.5 costs?
If these rumors are true, it would seem like Sony is following the fragmentation steps of Nintendo mainly because New Nintendo 3DS games can’t be played on all previous Nintendo 3DS portable devices. Microsoft also seems to want to make a better console the way PCs are upgraded.
