Sci-fi fans should be excited now as CBS announces a new Star Trek TV series is coming to CBS All Access on January 2017.
While it’s great news for fans who have followed the series and its films, the network is putting a spin to the availability of the series, in other words, how people will be seeing it. After a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network, the series in the U.S. will be seen exclusively via CBS All Access, the network’s paid streaming platform.
This marks the first time the network will bring a brand-new show to straight to CBS All Access. The network’s goal sounds, like Spock would say, logical and illogical at the same time. In order to get more subscribers, CBS will try to get the attention of millions of fans to sign up, however, no other major television network offers this paid subscription.
CBS also announced Alex Kurtzman will be the new series’ executive producer; he previously co-wrote and produced the alternate reality Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). These two films were directed and produced by J.J. Abrams.
“Every day, an episode of the Star Trek franchise is seen in almost every country in the world,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO at CBS Global Distribution Group. “We can’t wait to introduce Star Trek’s next voyage on television to its vast global fan base.”
Will this statement also mean the presence of a diverse cast of characters? CBS has not revealed yet the cast for the new series.
The upcoming TV series has no relation to the upcoming Summer 2016 film titled Star Trek Beyond.
For CBS charging $5.99 a month, the price is right for people to watch all Star Trek TV series episodes and many other shows, but, will it be enough to convince US fans to subscribe to the network’s paid streaming service? CBS All Access has caught the attention of a minuscule amount of subscribers compared to Netflix (100,000+ vs Netflix’s 60+ million).
CBS will also distribute the new Star Trek series for international release via TV and other platforms.
The Star Trek franchise will celebrate its 50th anniversary on September 8, 2016.
