Among the thousands of hacked Sony emails released by Wikileaks on its web site today, two emails indeed show Sony Pictures was interested in making a Super Mario / Super Smash Bros. film. Though Sony only got to make Pixels, the upcoming videogame movie starring Adam Sandler, nothing else is known about a film based on a Nintendo franchise.
The following email was written by Michelle Raimo Kouyate (former President of Production of Sony Pictures Animation) and sent to Amy Pascal (former Chairperson of the Motion Pictures Group of Sony Pictures Entertainment) on February 24, 2014:
Super Mario/Smash bros
In our meeting on Friday you said you wanted to do a full court press
(yay) – shall I set a meeting with all of us and Avi? I know Avi is
planning to meet with his Nintendo guy (who he has been courting for a
couple of years) when he goes to Japan for Spidey next month – he said
he thinks the time. I think it would be helpful.

Another email was sent by Kouyate also to Pascal on April 10, 2014:
Nintendo/Avi
You may have already done this but any of the more positive feelings
you have toward Popeye that you could share with Avi – I think it may
help with super Mario/super smash bros. And assurances about a
potential deal (he had mentioned he was worried about that).

Other emails show Pascal bought a Super Smash Bros. game from Amazon late last year and film director Avi Arad stated “I am the proud father of mario the animated film.so exciting.i. Hope that you are as excited.kyoto is beatiful.xo.” Though Kouyate and Pascal are no longer working at Sony Pictures, will others be convincing Nintendo to make a Super Smash Bros. film?
