If you love gaming and want to take the path into design and development, now there is a way to put your skills to the test with Unreal Engine 4, downloadable for free to anyone starting today. The Unreal Engine has set the standard in game development for many years, and Epic Games is making UE4 and future updates free, available to the masses. When Epic Games released UE4 last year, the company adopted a subscription model with a royalty of 5% of sales. In today’s announcement, the company stated developers will still pay a “a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter.” Bigger studios will still have the option to negotiate contracts to either pay less or nothing for royalty payments, according to Gamasutra.
In the blog post, Tim Sweeny at Epic Games said: “The past year has been a whirlwind for everyone at Epic Games. Our community has grown tremendously. The quality and variety of creative work being done has been breathtaking. When we asked people to submit their projects to be shown this year at GDC, we had the challenge of picking just 8 from over 100 finalists that were all good enough to show.”
With more attention coming in the form of virtual reality, UE4 can now open the door to your imagination.
