Anime fans may want to add a new live-action film to their list of movies to watch in the near future. With her success on last year’s films Lucy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, actress Scarlett Johansson has signed up to play the main role of Motoko Kusanagi in the film adaptation of the anime/manga Ghost in the Shell, sources told Variety.
Sources also said:
- Rupert Sanders will be the film’s director.
- Both Avi Arad and Steven Paul have been chosen as producers
- Mark Sourian has been selected as executive producer.
- If interested, Paramount has the option to participate as co-producer and financier.
According to Variety, Dreamworks’ Steven Spielberg is a real fan of the original and “and has long wanted to get this film off the ground.” With the involvement of Johansson, it is more likely that the film gets greenlit for production.
