Luigi Death Stare appears in Japanese Nintendo commercial

Earlier today, Nintendo shared on its YouTube  page this 30-second commercial, with a smile from Donkey Kong, a kiss from Princess Peach, a happy and a serious face from Mario himself, but most importantly, the Luigi Death Stare.

I wonder if Nintendo had this planned all along, because the sales of this game is bringing the Wii U to more sales, and perhaps this meme is actually bringing smiles to Luigi (or his creator) because of the success of the game.
