Invaders from outer space will be coming to the big screen near you. Are you excited? You should be, especially if you’ve played the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders created by Japanese game developer Taito (a subsidiary of Square Enix since 2005).
Warner Bros. acquired today the film rights to the video game franchise. Akiva Goldsman at Weed Road Pictures and Tory Tunnell along with Joby Harold from Safehouse Pictures, will be producing the film. Goldsman has directed Winter’s Tale for Warner Bros.
Space Invaders is one of the classic 80s games featured in the short film Pixels directed by Patrick Jean (see image). A film with Adam Sandler, also titled Pixels and based on Jean’s short film, is also in the works, and will include a space invasion.
Q: How will the shoot’em up game become a movie? The game itself lacks a storyline.
