Microsoft had big plans to bring original video programming via Xbox Live, but after today’s company announcement of 18,000 job cuts (mostly from its Nokia acquisition) and its withdrawal of producing Nokia Android smartphones, the Xbox Entertainment Studios division will also be shutdown in the coming months.
Under the XES division, Microsoft was able to bring Every Street United, a special series about the FIFA World Cup. The company will still be working on the Signal to Noise documentary series, the Halo: Nightfall live-action digital series, the Halo TV series, and content for NFL on Xbox.
What does this mean to gamers? While this may disappoint some people interested in other form of entertainment, Microsoft will focus solely on games, but will let other companies through partnerships to bring their content to Xbox Live.
