[EN]: A patent application by Sony reveals technology that can be used to block games in more than one console. Earlier today, a NeoGAF user found a patent documentation online that shows detailed information about Sony’s plans to restrict the use of game discs most likely on its upcoming game console.

For Sony CE Japan, “the main purpose thereof is to provide a technology for restricting the use of electronic content store in a recording medium according to the use entities of the electronic content.”

With the use of RF (radiofrequency) IDs on every disc, it will tie a game disc to a user ID and/or to a single console. In other words, a gamer would not be able to borrow a game to their friends unless they use their friend’s PSN username or game console, something that perhaps most gamers would not do, if Sony applies the most restricted features to the PS4/Orbis.

If this technology gets to be implemented on Sony’s next game console, gamers would have to think twice about buying a PlayStation console. Sony has not said anything about the matter but GameStop has been affected by this finding.

GameStop’s share prices were down as much as 7% during normal hours due to news about this Sony patent; however, most investors are not worried, though at the end of the day, the company’s share prices went down 5%.

Because 46% of GameStop’s profits (in its last fiscal year) come from its earnings on the used-game market, it would hurt the company if Sony implements this technology, though Sony does this to fight illegally copied games.

It seems reasonable when it comes to installing this tech to fight counterfeit copies of games, but it could hurt more to gamers (not being able to play their games at their friends’ house), retail companies (if a gamer returns a copy to the store and someone else wants to buy a used copy), game rental companies (Gamefly, Redbox, Blockbuster) and Sony itself (by discouraging gamers if the company applies this technology).

We still have to wait if Sony decides on applying this technology on its upcoming game console, but perhaps this could be a deciding factor whether a gamer wants a PS4/Orbis or chooses a competing console.
