[EN]: The PlayStation 2 has brought lots of memories to gamers since March of 2000 in Japan. For many people, the console also became their first DVD players. It has become one of the most popular consoles with over 150 million units sold. Even after the launch of the PS3 in November of 2006, many memorable games were still available for the PS2, and it is still supported by some companies. But every console has to say good-bye sooner or later.
Sony Japan has decided to discontinue the shipment of the PS2. The European and American branches of Sony Computer Entertainment have not made any announcements yet, but it is most likely it will follow suit.
As a fan of Japanese games, I guess this is the best time to buy a Japanese PS2 console, before the prices go up. I just wonder if the upcoming PlayStation console will come with backward compatibility for the PS1, PS2, and PS3.
Even though there will be no more new PlayStation 2 consoles on sale, one new game will be on sale in 2013 for it in Japan: Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin.
Though many of the most popular games released for the PS2 are coming to the PS3, it’s hard to forget the many amazing titles that were released during the PS2’s lifetime.
