Reseña: El Nuevo iPad (16GB, 4G+Wi-Fi, Verizon Wireless)

Apple ha establecido los estándares para los productos electrónicos portátiles desde la llegada del iPod y el iPhone. La compañía de tecnología entendió las necesidades de los mercados correspondientes, y los transformó para revolucionar ambas industrias. Con el reciente lanzamiento del nuevo iPad, Apple demuestra una vez más que es el líder en el mercado de tabletas, mientras que otras empresas se ponen al día en el departamento de características. Aunque la elección es muy clara para muchos conocedores de la tecnología que buscan los últimos dispositivos, para la mayoría de los demás será si quieren el iPad 2 (a $ 100 menos) o la nueva iPad. ¿Qué ofrece el nuevo iPad ahora para convencer a la gente a dar el salto de la familia de primera y segunda generación de tabletas?

Al abrir y al prender de inmediato el nuevo iPad, me di cuenta de que era muy fácil de configurar el nuevo dispositivo. Unos minutos más tarde, ya estaba revisando las aplicaciones, haciendo cambios en la configuración, añadiendo nuevos accesos directos principales, y la descargando las aplicaciones que son más importantes para la comunicación diaria y la diversión. Por un poco me pregunté qué podía hacer (y qué no) con ella, por lo que había empezado a utilizarlo lo más posible el día en que lo recibió.

A primera vista

Las nuevas características de este dispositivo lo convierten en un gadget o aparato muy atractivo para muchas de nuestras actividades en nuestra vida en línea, trabajando muy rápidamente y con eficacia. El aspecto del nuevo iPad es básicamente el mismo que el del iPad 2 (la que se lanzó el año pasado), pero hay algunas diferencias sutiles. A pesar de que mantiene la forma hermosa de la iPad 2, los bordes se ven mejor y un poco más notorios. Recibí el modelo negro. Su color sólido es buenísimo. Todo el dispositivo se ve moderno y sencillo a la vez, pero algunas personas pueden tener dificultades para reconocer la diferencia mirando la parte frontal del nuevo iPad y el iPad 2 (si está uno junto al otro).

Lo que hay adentro

La nueva pantalla Retina, el procesador de aplicaciones de doble núcleo A5X con la unidad de procesamiento de cuatro núcleos gráficos, la velocidad Internet 4G, y la cámara mejorada son las principales novedades que diferencian claramente al nuevo iPad de las tabletas anteriores de Apple.

Esta nueva pantalla Retina hace que las fotos y videos se vean realmente nítidas. Su resolución es la primera de su clase en los dispositivos móviles, ofreciendo una calidad mejor que la televisión de alta definición HDTV, que es fantástico en sí mismo. Nada puede competir con este todavía. El texto que ha sido algo difícil de leer en los dispositivos anteriores para algunos usuarios es mucho más nítido ahora, pero a partir de ahora, hay muchas aplicaciones de terceros que aún no aprovechan de esto, pero deben ser actualizados en breve. Las aplicaciones de iPad y el anterior iPhone en el nuevo iPad vienen con un “2X” que amplía la aplicación para facilitar la visualización. El procesador de doble núcleo es una característica vista en los nuevos dispositivos móviles de alta gama, pero la GPU (unidad de procesamiento gráfico) de cuatro núcleos hace que sea ideal para jugar juegos con gráficos intensivos que requieren lo mejor, y algo que ninguna otra tableta tiene en la actualidad. La GPU y la pantalla retina tanto podría hacer que los juegos sean muy buenos en una tableta.

Una cuestión en particular, sin embargo, ha llamado la atención de algunas personas y de Consumer Reports: la alta temperatura del nuevo iPad al jugar ciertos juegos, como Infinity Blade II. Velocidad de la red

Con Verizon Wireless, la velocidad de la red es absolutamente increíble en 4G. Al igual que en algunos teléfonos inteligentes Android con 4G, el nuevo iPad, en las diferentes áreas de la Florida Central, pasó de una velocidad de descarga de 3.98 Mbps a 21.27 Mbps. En términos de velocidad de cargas (ej., cuando uno sube un vídeo a Facebook para compartirlo con otros), su velocidad menor fue de 3.05 Mbps y su velocidad mayor fue de 14.30 Mbps.

Albert Aydan, representante de relaciones públicas de Verizon Wireless en Español, mencionó que la compañía tiene plena confianza en su red para sostener este dispositivo porque “la red 4G LTE de Verizon Wireless es la más grande y la más avanzado del mundo. Una de las características del modelo de Verizon ofrece que la versión de AT&T no es la función de punto de acceso personal. Esto hace que el nuevo dispositivo sea capaz de compartir su conexión a Internet con otros dispositivos. Funcionó a la perfección con mi Nintendo 3DS cuando se accede a la tienda virtual de Nintendo, más rápido que mi conexión Internet en casa para descargar nuevas aplicaciones y/o juegos.

La cámara iSight

El iPad 2 cuenta con una captura de 0,7 megapíxeles que puede ser comparado a tomar fotos pequeñas e impresos o a mirar vídeo en una pantalla pequeña y portátil. Esta vez, el nuevo iPad viene con una cámara trasera de 5 megapíxeles que ofrece una calidad mucho mejor en fotos y videos, pero no supera las capacidades de captura de 8 megapíxeles de otros teléfonos inteligentes o tabletas recién lanzadas en el mercado. La estabilización de vídeo sí ayuda, pero es la calidad en efecto que hace que el dispositivo tenga éxito. La calidad de la foto es increíble. Aunque el nuevo iPad es un dispositivo un poco grande para tomar fotos, es bien bueno para mostrar a los demás a tu alrededor las fotos impresionantes que puedes tomar en una pantalla tan agradable.

Duración de la batería

Hasta con más características, Apple hace que la vida de la batería del nuevo iPad funcione casi tanto como la de la iPad 2. Durante 5 días, usé el dispositivo con frecuencia jugando juegos, revisando mis cuentas de correo electrónico, escribiendo entradas de blog, grabando vídeos, tuiteando, Facebook-eando, descargando nuevas aplicaciones, leyendo las noticias, estudiando y repasando material de documentos PDF y PowerPoint para las certificaciones TI (Tecnología de la Información), y así sucesivamente. Nno tenía que preocuparme de recargar el dispositivo hasta el final del día. Más de 10 horas de duración de la batería es tal vez demasiado tiempo para hacer cosas en un dispositivo móvil, pero cualquier persona que necesite un dispositivo móvil potente que funciona por muchas horas tiene que echar un vistazo a este.

Recargar el dispositivo no funciona si se conecta a un puerto USB 2.0 del ordenador, algo que el iPad 2 sí lo hace.

Una cosa que agregar

Como una persona bilingüe, me encanta ver la información en dos idiomas, así que cambié el idioma en la configuración al español y luego de vuelta al inglés otra vez. Yo había vuelto a la App Store (Tienda de aplicaciones) cuando estaba en español, pero después de volver cuando ya estaba en inglés, me di cuenta de ciertas palabras en la barra de menú en la parte inferiorque no volvieron al inglés. Palabras tales como Features, Categories, Purchased y Updates no volvieron al inglés del español (ver las imágenes debajo). No es que me queje, pero es un asunto que debe ser corregido, a menos a que Genius sepa en realidad que yo soy bilingüe y I like it like that (una canción viene a la mente).

Soporte de idiomas y “¿” Dónde en el mundo (del nuevo iPad) está Siri?

El asistente de voz, Siri, no se encuentra presente aquí, pero una de sus características específicas llegó a esta versión. La capacidad de dictado hace más fácil y rápida la búsqueda de la aplicación que deseo o del texto en un correo electrónico, junto con Buscar en Internet y Buscar en Wikipedia.

Además del inglés, francés, japonés, chino y otros con los que funciona este dispositivo, el dictado en el idioma español está aún ausente, como en el último iPhone con Siri. Tenía que decir Univisión en inglés para llegar a las aplicaciones de la red de televisión. Por alguna razón, pensé en el Uni Beam de Iron Man en UMvC3 (Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3) cuando lo dije de esa manera. ¿Podría una actualización iOS traer soporte en español (y a Siri)?

Otra hecho agradable es la disponibilidad de caracteres ASCII que muchos geeks, como yo, utilizan para comunicarse con los demás. Mediante la adición de romanji japonés, es bien fácil compartir emoticonos. Al hacer clic en el icono de globo, se cambia el diseño de teclado del idioma de inmediato. Los fans del anime deben aprovecharse de esto. Sé que yo lo haré.

Consejo rápido

Organiza los iconos principales de modo que será más fácil para volver a la App Store (Tienda de aplicaciones) después de la descarga de una aplicación. Tener que buscar la App Store nos tomaría unos cuantos segundos, pero si se coloca en el menú principal, estaría sólo a un clic de distancia (ver lá tercera imágen debajo).

Por qué lo debes tener

La gente ha estado buscando la perfección en los dispositivos portátiles de Apple desde que la compañía ganó el corazón de millones de personas. A pesar de que un solo dispositivo todavía no puede hacer feliz a todos para sus necesidades en línea, el nuevo iPad trae muchas características nuevas valen más que $100 de descuento de la iPad 2. La velocidad 4G y sus capacidades de procesamiento CPU y GPU hacen que las aplicaciones Internet funcionen a la perfección. No hay ningún retraso en las aplicaciones para obtener información actualizada. Es mucho más rápido ver las aplicaciones siendo actualizadas. Pero, para los que dependen de la información constante y rápida, llevan sus tabletas consigo mismos para sus trabajos o para sus diversiones, quieren jugar los últimos juegos móviles, grabar vídeos de momentos familia para verlos en una pantalla superior de calidad a la televisión de alta definición para que varios vean, y tener acceso a una enorme cantidad de aplicaciones, el nuevo iPad es un dispositivo que es imposible de ignorar. Tal vez debería estar en tus manos ahora.

Apple has set the standards for portable, electronic products since the arrival of the iPod and the iPhone. The technology company understood the needs of the corresponding markets, and turned them around to revolutionize both industries. With the recent release of the new iPad, Apple once again shows it leads the way in the tablets market as well, as other companies will play catch-up in the features department. Though the choice is crystal-clear for many tech-savvy people looking for the latest devices, for most others it will be if they want the iPad 2 (for $100 less) or the newest iPad. What is the new iPad offering now to convince people to make the jump from the first- and second-generation family of tablets?

As I opened the new iPad and turned it on immediately, I noticed it was real easy to setup the new device. A few minutes later, I was already checking out the apps, making changes to the settings, adding new main shortcuts, and downloading the apps that are most important for everyday communication and fun. For a bit I wondered what I could do (and not do) with it, so, I started using it as much as possible the day I received it.

At first sight

The new features of this device make it a very attractive gadget for many of our activities in our online life by working very rapidly and effectively. The look of the new iPad is basically the same as the one for the iPad 2 (the one launched last year), but there are a few subtle differences. Though it keeps the beautiful shape of the iPad 2, the edges look better and somewhat more noticeable. I received the one black model. Its solid color is great. The whole device looks modern yet simple, but some people may have a hard time recognizing the difference by looking at the front of the new iPad and the iPad 2 (if they are next to each other).

What’s Inside

The new Retina display, the A5X dual-core application processor with the quad-core graphics processing unit, the 4G Internet speed, and the upgraded camera are the main new features that clearly separate the new iPad from Apple’s previous tablets.

This new Retina display makes pictures and videos look really sharp. Its resolution is a first on mobile devices by offering a better-than-HDTV quality which is fantastic in itself. Nothing can compete against it yet. Text that has a bit difficult to read in previous devices for some users is much more crystal-clear now, but as of now, there are many third-party apps that do not yet take advantage of this, but should be updated soon. The iPhone and old iPad apps in the new iPad do come with a “2X” that zooms in into the application for easier viewing. While it’s great to see better-looking apps, the new updated games, utilities and other software will make the new iPad’s storage device fill faster. As of now, there are less than 50 apps ready for the new Retina display. Angry Birds Space is one those supporting it.

The dual-core processor is a feature seen in newer, high-end mobile devices, but the quad-core GPU makes it great to play graphic-intensive games that require the best of the new iPad, and something no other tablet currently has. The GPU and the retina display both could make gaming great on a tablet.

One issue in particular, though, has called out the attention of some people and Consumer Reports: the high temperature of the new iPad when playing certain games, such as Infinity Blade II. The Antennagate issue with the iPad 2 was a great concern for users and Apple, however, this heat problem does not seem to be of much importance in many new iPads. It feels a bit more on the warm side, but not enough to make people stop using it for brief or normal use. The new iPad User Guide says: “If the interior temperature of iPad exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature: iPad stops charging, the screen dims, a temperature warning screen appears.” The device cannot be used while the warning screen appears, and goes into deep sleep mode to cool down itself “if the iPad can’t regulate its internal temperature”. Net Speed

With Verizon Wireless, the net speed is absolutely amazing in 4G. As in some Android smartphones with 4G, the new iPad, in different areas of Central Florida, went from a download speed of 3.98 Mbps to 21.27 Mbps. In terms of upload speed, it went as low as 3.05 Mbps and as high as 14.30 Mbps.

Albert Aydan, Public Relations representative at Verizon Wireless en Español, said the company has full confidence in its network in supporting this device because “Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is the largest and most advanced one in the world. The 4G network is available in 200 markets across the US and serves over 200 million people.”

One feature the Verizon model offers that the AT&T version does not is the personal hotspot feature. It makes the new device able to share its Internet connection with other devices. It worked perfectly with my Nintendo 3DS when accessing the Nintendo eShop, as fast as my Internet home connection to download new apps and/or games.

The iSight camera

The iPad 2 features a 0.7-megapixel capture that can be compared to taking small, printed photos or looking at video in a small, portable screen. This time, the new iPad comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera that offers much better quality in pictures and videos, but it does not surpass the 8-megapixel capture capabilities of other, recently-released smartphones or tablets. The video stabilization does help, but the quality does indeed make the device succeed. The photo quality is amazing. Though the new iPad is a somewhat big device to take pictures with, it’s so good to show others around you the awesome photos you can take with it in such a nice screen.

Battery Life

Even with more features, Apple makes the new iPad’s battery life work almost as much as the one in the iPad 2. For 5 days, I used the device frequently by playing games, checking my email accounts, writing blog posts, recording videos, twitting around, Facebook’ing, downloading new apps, reading the news, studying/reviewing IT (Information Technology) for certifications from PDF & PowerPoint documents, and so on. I did not have to worry about recharging the device until the end of the day. Over 10 hours of battery life is perhaps too much time to do stuff on a mobile device, but anyone who needs a working, powerful mobile device for that many hours has to take a look at this one.

Recharging, though, does not work when connected to a computer’s USB 2.0 port, something the iPad 2 does.

One thing to add | Una cosa que añadir

As a bilingual person, I love seeing information in two languages, so, I did switch the language in Settings to Spanish and then back to English again. I had gone back to the App Store when it was in Spanish, but after returning to English, I noticed certain words in the menu bar at the bottom did not change back to English. Words like Features, Categories, Purchased, and Updates did not change back to English from Spanish (see images in the slideshow). Not that I’m complaining, but it’s an issue that should be corrected, unless Genius knows I’m really bilingual and that I like it like that (some song comes to mind).

Language Support & “¿”Where in the World (of the New iPad) is Siri?

The voice assistant, Siri, is missing, but one of her specific features made it into this version. The dictation capability makes it easier and quick to look for the app I want or the text in an email, along with Search Web and Search Wikipedia.

Besides English, French, Japanese, Chinese and other languages supported on this device, the Spanish-language dictation is still absent, as in the latest iPhone with Siri. I had to say Univisión the English American way to come up with the TV network apps. For some reason, I thought of Iron Man’s Uni Beam in UMvC3 when I said it that way. Could an iOS update bring Spanish-language support (and Siri)?

Another nice feat is the availability of ASCII characters that many geeks, like me, use to communicate with others. By adding Japanese Romanji, it’s so easy to share emoticons. Clicking on the Globe icon switches language keyboard layout immediately. Anime fans should take advantage of this. I know I will.

Quick Advice

Arrange the main icons so that it will be easier to return to the App Store right after downloading an app. Having to look for the App Store again could take a few seconds, but if placed on the shortcut menu, it would be just a click away (see image in slideshow).

Why you should get it

People have been looking for perfection in Apple’s portable devices since the company won the heart of millions. Though a single device cannot yet make everyone happy for their online needs, the new iPad does brings many new features that are much worth than the $100 difference discount of the iPad 2. The 4G speed and its CPU & GPU processing capabilities make Internet apps work seamlessly. There is no delay in apps getting updated information. Seeing apps updated is much quicker. Video apps show no lag when watching videos on YouTube or in other sites with or without the Safari browser. The battery life is still great. In other words, buying an iPad 2 should only be recommended for people who are into little or casual Internet browsing, social networking, and other basic tasks (things that can also be done in an iPhone or other devices). But, for the ones who depend on constant and quick information, take their tablets with them for work or amusement, want to play the latest mobile games, record family moments to see them in a higher-than-HDTV-quality screen for many to see, and have access to an enormous amount of apps, the new iPad is a device that is impossible to ignore. It should perhaps be in your hands now.

Apple has sent invitations to the press inviting selected journalists to an event on March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The image of an Apple device with the message “We have something you really have to see. And touch” almost confirms it’s the iPad 3, though the company has not confirmed anything yet (like what device it is or any details of it). This Apple event will coincide with the Game Developers’ Conference. The location of both events are at a short distance of each other. Will it be a 4G LTE device like many people hope?

Apple ha enviado invitaciones a la prensa invitando a periodistas seleccionados para un evento el 7 de marzo en el Yerba Buena Center for the Arts en San Francisco. La imagen de un dispositivo de Apple con el mensaje ” Tenemos algo que realmente hay que ver . Y tocar ” casi confirma que es el iPad 3, aunque la compañía no ha confirmado nada aún (como qué dispositivo es o cualquier otro detalle del mismo). 2012, el año de Internet móvil para los anunciantes

Con Google a la cabeza, la inversión en anuncios para telefonía móvil bate su propio récord en EE.UU. Las expectativas para 2012 y los desafíos pendientes.

El número de personas que se conectan a Internet desde sus teléfonos crece a un ritmo exponencial impulsado por la penetración de los “smartphones” y la fiebre de consumo hacia toda clase de tabletas. La tecnología propone y los usuarios disponen: moverse es llevarse a las redes sociales en el bolsillo y no “perder” la conexión con el mundo.

Estas tendencias están más que sólidas en Estados Unidos, dónde la publicidad en telefonía móvil comienza a seducir a las grandes marcas mientras genera ambiciosas predicciones. Según la consultora especializada eMarketer, la inversión en anuncios para este medio rondará los 2.600 millones de dólares este año. Esta cifra rectifica un cálculo anterior de 1.800 millones, lo que evidencia el dinamismo que caracteriza al sector.

La historia reciente del negocio ya nos daba pistas sobre sus potencialidades: en 2011 la publicidad en telefonía móvil atrajo inversiones por 1400 millones de dólares, duplicando el volumen registrado en 2010.

Sin embargo, en esta carrera por captar a los millones de usuarios de dispositivos móviles, no todos los números son vertiginosos y cambiantes. Google en 2011, se alzó con el 51,7% de los ingresos del sector, lo que le representó ganancias por 750 millones de dólares. Mucho más lejos, Apple debió conformarse con 92,4 millones (6,4%) y Millennial con 90,9 millones (6,3%).

La fortaleza de la compañía fundada por Larry Page y Sergey Brin se explica por su predominio en los motores de búsqueda. El 95% de los ingresos publicitarios en esta categoría de anuncios le corresponden. Apple y Millennial de momento no asoman en este rubro.

El motor de la inversión

A estas enormes perspectivas comerciales que despierta la publicidad móvil le quedan, sin embargo, algunos enigmas por resolver. Desde eMarketer resaltan que la mayor parte de las inversiones se concentran en los anuncios indexados en motores de búsqueda. Y esta tendencia, proyectan los expertos, se mantendrá por lo menos hasta el año 2016.

Mientras tanto, otros formatos de anuncios (incluyendo desde videos hasta mensajería MMS y P2P) aparecen relegados a un segundo plano aunque con expectativas de crecimiento sostenido.

Según los analistas, la menor inversión en los anuncios publicitarios más sofisticados podría explicarse por la desconfianza de las grandes marcas hacia formatos que se juzgan mucho menos eficaces en comparación con la publicidad mediante motores de búsqueda.

Aunque con este escenario la preeminencia de Google parece asegurada, el comportamiento cambiante del mercado y de sus inversores todavía pueden depararnos alguna sorpresa.

Only one day after Apple’s most recent presentation of its newest products, one of the most influential persons in the world of technology has died. Steve Jobs, the founder and former CEO of the company known worldwide for its iPhone, iPad and iPos devices, and the iMac computers, has passed away today Wednesday, October 10th, at the age of 56. Jobs had been suffering from pancreas cancer.

The tech industry will surely miss him.

Uno de los co-fundadores de la empresa Apple acaba de anunciar la renuncia de su posición como jefe ejecutivo principal.

Steve Jobs, cuya compañía es sinónima con reproductores de música (iPod), una marca popular de teléfonos móviles (iPhone), tabletas (iPad) y computadoras iMac en el mundo de dispositivos electrónicos, anunció su renuncia el día de hoy.

De parte de la junta de la empresa, Art Levinson dijo: “la extraordinaria visión y el liderazgo de Steve salvó a Apple y la guió hacia su posición como compañía mundial de tecnología más innovadora y valiosa. Steve ha realizado innumerables contribuciones para el éxito de Apple, y que ha atraído e inspirado a los empleados inmensamente creativos de Apple y al equipo ejecutivo de primera clase. En su nuevo papel como presidente de la junta, Steve continuará sirviendo a Apple con su visión única, creatividad e inspiración”.

Actualización 2: Se piensa que la renuncia de Steve Jobs como jefe ejecutivo es debido a su salud. Desde comienzos de este año, Jobs había recibido una baja médica, mientras que Cook desempeñaba todas las operaciones diarias de él. Continuaba Jobs con su participación en las decisiones más primordiales de la empresa. En junio de 2009, Jobs había tenido un transplante de higado.

As COO, Cook was previously responsible for all of the company’s worldwide sales and operations, including end-to-end management of Apple’s supply chain, sales activities, and service and support in all markets and countries. He also headed Apple’s Macintosh division and played a key role in the continued development of strategic reseller and supplier relationships, ensuring flexibility in response to an increasingly demanding marketplace.

At just a few months away for the first anniversary of the launch of the iPad tablet, Apple will show the newest version of its mentioned device at a special event in California. Apple sent invites this morning to members of the media for an official presentation on March 2nd. The event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

With confirmation of an event from Apple, speculations are still rolling about the new features of the iPad. After the success of its first tablet, the device is expected to provide some functions that were absent on its current version, but will be present on the upcoming one. Among those are: FaceTime video chat feature, front-facing camera, and connection to both GSM and CDMA wireless networks.

The invitation received by members of the press shows a small part of the device on the upper right corner. Most of the picture is occupied by the date of the event with the following message at the bottom: ”Come see what 2011 will be the year of.”
