Review: The new iPad (16GB, 4G + Wi-Fi, Verizon Wireless)

[EN]:

Apple has set the standards for portable, electronic products since the arrival of the iPod and the iPhone. The technology company understood the needs of the corresponding markets, and turned them around to revolutionize both industries. With the recent release of the new iPad, Apple once again shows it leads the way in the tablets market as well, as other companies will play catch-up in the features department. Though the choice is crystal-clear for many tech-savvy people looking for the latest devices, for most others it will be if they want the iPad 2 (for $100 less) or the newest iPad. What is the new iPad offering now to convince people to make the jump from the first- and second-generation family of tablets?

As I opened the new iPad and turned it on immediately, I noticed it was real easy to setup the new device. A few minutes later, I was already checking out the apps, making changes to the settings, adding new main shortcuts, and downloading the apps that are most important for everyday communication and fun. For a bit I wondered what I could do (and not do) with it, so, I started using it as much as possible the day I received it.

At first sight

The new features of this device make it a very attractive gadget for many of our activities in our online life by working very rapidly and effectively. The look of the new iPad is basically the same as the one for the iPad 2 (the one launched last year), but there are a few subtle differences. Though it keeps the beautiful shape of the iPad 2, the edges look better and somewhat more noticeable. I received the one black model. Its solid color is great. The whole device looks modern yet simple, but some people may have a hard time recognizing the difference by looking at the front of the new iPad and the iPad 2 (if they are next to each other).

What’s Inside

The new Retina display, the A5X dual-core application processor with the quad-core graphics processing unit, the 4G Internet speed, and the upgraded camera are the main new features that clearly separate the new iPad from Apple’s previous tablets.

This new Retina display makes pictures and videos look really sharp. Its resolution is a first on mobile devices by offering a better-than-HDTV quality which is fantastic in itself. Nothing can compete against it yet. Text that has a bit difficult to read in previous devices for some users is much more crystal-clear now, but as of now, there are many third-party apps that do not yet take advantage of this, but should be updated soon. The iPhone and old iPad apps in the new iPad do come with a “2X” that zooms in into the application for easier viewing. While it’s great to see better-looking apps, the new updated games, utilities and other software will make the new iPad’s storage device fill faster. As of now, there are less than 50 apps ready for the new Retina display. Angry Birds Space is one those supporting it.

The dual-core processor is a feature seen in newer, high-end mobile devices, but the quad-core GPU makes it great to play graphic-intensive games that require the best of the new iPad, and something no other tablet currently has. The GPU and the retina display both could make gaming great on a tablet.

One issue in particular, though, has called out the attention of some people and Consumer Reports: the high temperature of the new iPad when playing certain games, such as Infinity Blade II. The Antennagate issue with the iPad 2 was a great concern for users and Apple, however, this heat problem does not seem to be of much importance in many new iPads. It feels a bit more on the warm side, but not enough to make people stop using it for brief or normal use. The new iPad User Guide says: “If the interior temperature of iPad exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature: iPad stops charging, the screen dims, a temperature warning screen appears.” The device cannot be used while the warning screen appears, and goes into deep sleep mode to cool down  itself “if the iPad can’t regulate its internal temperature”. For CNET, the heat is not an issue [http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57401047-37/confirmed-new-ipads-heat-a-non-issue/].

Net Speed

With Verizon Wireless, the net speed is absolutely amazing in 4G. As in some Android smartphones with 4G, the new iPad, in different areas of Central Florida, went from a download speed of 3.98 Mbps to 21.27 Mbps. In terms of upload speed, it went as low as 3.05 Mbps and as high as 14.30 Mbps.

Albert Aydan, Public Relations representative at Verizon Wireless en Español, said the company has full confidence in its network in supporting this device because “Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is the largest and most advanced one in the world. The 4G network is available in 200 markets across the US and serves over 200 million people.”

One feature the Verizon model offers that the AT&T version does not is the personal hotspot feature. It makes the new device able to share its Internet connection with other devices. It worked perfectly with my Nintendo 3DS when accessing the Nintendo eShop, as fast as my Internet home connection to download new apps and/or games.

The iSight camera

The iPad 2 features a 0.7-megapixel capture that can be compared to taking small, printed photos or looking at video in a small, portable screen. This time, the new iPad comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera that offers much better quality in pictures and videos, but it does not surpass the 8-megapixel capture capabilities of other, recently-released smartphones or tablets. The video stabilization does help, but the quality does indeed make the device succeed. The photo quality is amazing. Though the new iPad is a somewhat big device to take pictures with, it’s so good to show others around you the awesome photos you can take with it in such a nice screen.

Battery Life

Even with more features, Apple makes the new iPad’s battery life work almost as much as the one in the iPad 2. For 5 days, I used the device frequently by playing games, checking my email accounts, writing blog posts, recording videos, twitting around, Facebook’ing, downloading new apps, reading the news, studying/reviewing IT (Information Technology) for certifications from PDF & PowerPoint documents, and so on. I did not have to worry about recharging the device until the end of the day. Over 10 hours of battery life is perhaps too much time to do stuff on a mobile device, but anyone who needs a working, powerful mobile device for that many hours has to take a look at this one.

Recharging, though, does not work when connected to a computer’s USB 2.0 port, something the iPad 2 does.

One thing to add | Una cosa que añadir

As a bilingual person, I love seeing information in two languages, so, I did switch the language in Settings to Spanish and then back to English again. I had gone back to the App Store when it was in Spanish, but after returning to English, I noticed certain words in the menu bar at the bottom did not change back to English. Words like Features, Categories, Purchased, and Updates did not change back to English from Spanish (see images in the slideshow). Not that I’m complaining, but it’s an issue that should be corrected, unless Genius knows I’m really bilingual and that I like it like that (some song comes to mind).

Language Support & “¿”Where in the World (of the New iPad) is Siri?

The voice assistant, Siri, is missing, but one of her specific features made it into this version. The dictation capability makes it easier and quick to look for the app I want or the text in an email, along with Search Web and Search Wikipedia.

Besides English, French, Japanese, Chinese and other languages supported on this device, the Spanish-language dictation is still absent, as in the latest iPhone with Siri. I had to say Univisión the English American way to come up with the TV network apps. For some reason, I thought of Iron Man’s Uni Beam in UMvC3 when I said it that way. Could an iOS update bring Spanish-language support (and Siri)?

Another nice feat is the availability of ASCII characters that many geeks, like me, use to communicate with others. By adding Japanese Romanji, it’s so easy to share emoticons. Clicking on the Globe icon switches language keyboard layout immediately. Anime fans should take advantage of this. I know I will.

Quick Advice

Arrange the main icons so that it will be easier to return to the App Store right after downloading an app. Having to look for the App Store again could take a few seconds, but if placed on the shortcut menu, it would be just a click away (see image in slideshow).

Why you should get it

People have been looking for perfection in Apple’s portable devices since the company won the heart of millions. Though a single device cannot yet make everyone happy for their online needs, the new iPad does brings many new features that are much worth than the $100 difference discount of the iPad 2. The 4G speed and its CPU & GPU processing capabilities make Internet apps work seamlessly. There is no delay in apps getting updated information. Seeing apps updated is much quicker. Video apps show no lag when watching videos on YouTube or in other sites with or without the Safari browser. The battery life is still great. In other words, buying an iPad 2 should only be recommended for people who are into little or casual Internet browsing, social networking, and other basic tasks (things that can also be done in an iPhone or other devices). But, for the ones who depend on constant and quick information, take their tablets with them for work or amusement, want to play the latest mobile games, record family moments to see them in a higher-than-HDTV-quality screen for many to see, and have access to an enormous amount of apps, the new iPad is a device that is impossible to ignore. It should perhaps be in your hands now.

MBAOnline.com: “A Day in the Internet”

[EN]: I received an interesting email from Jenica Rhee with a link to a great infographic about the current state of the Internet. The infograph explains the power and influence of the Internet for people and businesses. It is worth taking a real look at this graphic. Read the following paragraphs for more info.

As more and more business is conducted online, more and more business opportunities are created due to the massive size of the internet. Companies like Amazon, Apple, and even Walmart are giants in e-commerce and their online revenues are continuing to soar. Last year, e-commerce raked in $680 billion worldwide. And on Black Friday alone, Amazon sold 32 items per second.

With the help of services like Facebook, Twitter, and email, companies are able to reach practically anybody on the internet – all 6.8 billion of them. Those pursuing an MBA will definitely need to consider the shear size of the internet when making their future business decisions. And the numbers behind the size of the internet are staggering. In fact, they’re almost unbelievable.

My thoughts about the 2011 LATISM Conference

Latinos do have a presence in the online social world, and many US Hispanic bloggers and national organizations were recognized for their effort in representing the best of the best. Among the winners, there was me. Woohoo!

To be recognized as Best Latin Tech Blogger at the 2011 LATISM Conference brought me lots of joy and happiness I have not had in many years. With 3+ years of blogging here on ElMundoTech, almost one year contributing with Impre.com’s Piensa Digital (thanks to Jesús del Toro), some months with WiredLatinos.com (thanks to Irene Martinez-Audet, brb soon), and writing for a weekly newspaper on-and-off for 3 years since 2006 thanks to Rubén Funes (former editor of La Prensa Orlando), I feel so proud about this accomplishment.

Though it’s already late to show this to my father, (he passed away years ago) I do have to thank him for the old days in which we used to sit next to each other to read the newspaper every day during my elementary school days in Lima, Peru. We would not put the newspaper down until we got to read the most interesting news and got to complete most of the 1-page-long crossword puzzle. Had he seen me receiving this award, my dad would have been very proud. He would not bite my ear again (see picture), that’s for sure. After I received the award and went back to my table, the first thing that came to my mind was “Gracias, papá.” I could not avoid a few tears.

Also, as a person who experienced epilepsy since the young age of 3 due to a fall from a stair, I understand how difficult life has been for others with a disability. In the 1970s and 80s and most of the 90s (during the early years of the Internet), it wasn’t easy for people to refer others with reliable information, much less for someone like me to have a voice. Many people did not know anything about epilepsy. That was then, but even today most people may not have a firm or concrete idea. At least we’re all now a click away, and people now can have a voice online, which makes me so proud about what Laurita Tellado is doing with HoldinOutForAHero.com and the Spina Bifida community in Central Florida (¡Hola Laurita y felicitaciones!). Laurita got the Best Latin Health Blogger award! Btw, having graduated from high school and college was not easy at all, yet having worked with students with disabilities (all very knowledgeable about videogames) as a substitute teacher has been an honor and a personal goal to show others that they can finish college or anything else they choose that follows high school.

I’d like to thank everyone at LATISM for letting me do two WordPress 101 workshops, and for the great opportunity to meet awesome and devoted people. I must say “gracias” to Ana Roca-Castro, Elianne Ramos, Reina Valenzuela, Sylvia Aguilera, bloggers, organizations, sponsors, and the rest of the LATISM family for making the conference an excellent event.  Thanks to everyone who voted for me as well. Like my dad used to say: “¡Arriba!”

ElMundoTech: Nominated Finalist for Best Latin Tech Blogger at LATISM Awards | Nominado Finalista para Mejor Bloguero de Tecnología en Premios LATISM

[English] | [Español]

After almost three and a half years of blogging about videogames, the net, and other tech-related subjects, I’m finally nominated. Woohoo!!!

I’ve been nominated a finalist for Best Latin Tech Blogger by Latinos in Social Media (LATISM), a non-profit, non-partisan organization promoting the social, civic and economical advancement of Hispanics here in the US.

I feel so proud.

Even before entering into the field of US Hispanic news media, I already knew there weren’t many people writing en español about technology, whether it’s computers, electronic devices, PCs, and videogames. This is still my goal today.

I got my first opportunity by writing for Impremedia’s La Prensa weekly newspaper here in Central Florida, thanks to former La Prensa editor Rubén Funes, in late February 2006. I got to go to E3 that same year (using my own money, of course), and wrote a special report about the event. It was a fantastic experience. Yet, I wanted to do more, and decided to open up this blog back in late July of 2008.

Another personal and professional achievement was in November 2010 when I became the first Freelance Blogger covering technology for Impre.com’s Piensa Digital, thanks to Jesús del Toro, current editor at Impremedia’s Rumbo Newspaper (in Texas), who is also the person in charge of Piensa Digital.

This year has been a great one in terms of blogging. Besdies my daily blogging activities here on ElMundoTech, I got to go to twice to NASA, one thanks to HispanicPRBlog to write a blog post on the newest space satellite used for our national security, and the second one thanks to Piensa Digital to see and write a post on the last space shuttle launch. I’ve also written posts for WiredLatinos.com.

I also got the attention of English-language media. A blog post written by Owen Good on Kotaku.com about my NASA trip and an uninvited guest caught the attention of many readers on Mario in Attendance at the Last Space Shuttle Launch post: [http://kotaku.com/5819677/mario-bids-bon-voyage-to-the-space-shuttle]. Being named on Kotaku made me really happy and proud.

Andrea Dee on WireBot.com wrote: “I think the guy is pretty creative in doing so. He wanted to do something different rather than just covering the liftoff. more like he wants some variety, so he posed Mario up! It would be great though, if this was real, the real Mario being an attendee of the event.” Jackie Spellicy on ZeldaInformer.com said: “his idea was definitely wonderful and the pictures will be cherished for years to come.”

There is still more to come: ”Major League Gaming” this weekend in Orlando, FL, and another event the weekend after. I’ll tell you more about it soon.

To vote for me, visit http://conference.latism.org/latism-awards/. On the inside page or frame, click on the box next to “Alberto Saldamando – http://elmundotech.wordpress.com/ (@ElMundoTech)” under “3. Best Latin@ Tech Blogger,” then, go down to “Done” and click on it.

Thanks in advance.

For now, it’s time to celebrate.

~Alberto.

~Alberto

Apple: “Steve Jobs Resigns as CEO of Apple” | Steve Jobs renuncia como jefe ejecutivo de Apple

[Click here to read the English-language press release]

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

“Our customers love the iMac’s aluminum enclosure, gorgeous display and all-in-one design,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With next generation quad-core processors, powerful new graphics, Thunderbolt technology and a FaceTime HD camera, we’ve made the world’s best desktop even better.”

The new iMac features quad-core Intel Core i5 processors with an option for customers to choose Core i7 processors up to 3.4 GHz. These next generation processors feature an integrated memory controller for an amazingly responsive experience and a powerful new media engine for high-performance video encoding and decoding. With new AMD Radeon HD graphics processors, the new iMac has the most powerful graphics ever in an all-in-one desktop.

iMac is the first desktop computer on the market to include groundbreaking Thunderbolt I/O technology. The 21.5-inch iMac has a single Thunderbolt port while the 27-inch model features two ports for even greater expansion. Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, Thunderbolt enables expandability never before possible on an all-in-one computer. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI and VGA displays. Freely available for implementation on systems, cables and devices, Thunderbolt technology is expected to be widely adopted as a new standard for high performance I/O.

iMac includes a built-in FaceTime HD camera and Apple’s innovative FaceTime software for crisp, widescreen video calling the whole family can enjoy. The new camera supports high definition video calls between all FaceTime HD-enabled Macs and standard resolution calls with iPad® 2, iPhone® 4, the current generation iPod touch® and other Intel-based Macs. The iMac continues to feature its signature aluminum and glass design, gorgeous IPS LED-backlit high resolution display, SD card slot and comes with Apple’s innovative Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

Continuing Apple’s commitment to the environment, Apple’s desktop line is a leader in green design. The iMac meets stringent Energy Star 5.2 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold rating.** iMac features LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. iMac uses PVC-free components and cables, contains no brominated flame retardants, uses highly recyclable materials and features material-efficient system and packaging designs.

Every Mac comes with Mac OS® X Snow Leopard®, the world’s most advanced operating system, and iLife®, Apple’s innovative suite of applications for creating and sharing great photos, movies and music. Snow Leopard builds on more than a decade of innovation and includes the Mac App Store℠ for finding great new apps for your Mac. iLife ’11 features iPhoto® with stunning full screen views for browsing, editing and sharing photos; iMovie® with powerful easy-to-use tools to transform home videos into fun theatrical trailers; and GarageBand® with new ways to improve your playing and create great sounding songs.
