Game developer Psyonix announced today Rocket League will leave Steam to move to Epic Games and become free-to-play this summer.
The upcoming update will make the 5-year-old game free-to-play in PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. However, once the game moves to the Epic Games Store with the release of the upcoming summer update, PC players won’t be able to buy Rocket League via Steam anymore though it will continue to get supported for future updates.
Fans who have played the game online before the release of the summer update will earn the Legacy status, which will include:
- All Rocket League-branded DLC released before free-to-play
- “Est. 20XX” title that displays the year when the player first started playing Rocket League
- 200+ Common items upgraded to “Legacy” quality
- Golden Cosmos Boost
- Dieci-Oro Wheels
- Huntress Player Banner
Also included is the Faded Cosmos Boost for fans who have played the game prior to today’s announcement.
Players will see the mentioned rewards along with their inventory and progress once the game update comes later this summer to PC and supported consoles.
“Plus we’re introducing cross-platform progression with free to play, and you’ll be able to bring items, Rocket Pass progress, and your Competitive Rank to every platform where you play Rocket League, thanks to an Epic Games Account. There’s a lot more to share about that, so stay tuned in the coming months.”
Psyonix, founded in 2000, was purchased by Epic Games in May 2019.
