Update: Shigeru Miyamoto is “retiring”?! Not really | Actualización: ¡¿Shigeru Miyamoto se “retira”?! En realidad, no.

[English]

Update: Reuters has just published a report stating “Nintendo denies report games designer Miyamoto to retire” [http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/08/us-nintendo-idUSTRE7B70C520111208].

After 30+ years at the company, Shigeru Miyamoto has announced he is “retiring.” In an interview with Wired.com, Miyamoto says he’s not leaving the company at all, but will be resigning from his current position that involves work on big, important projects at the company. Instead, he will focus on smaller and personal assignments.

“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire. I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”

Perhaps that’s why Super Mario 3D Land features many characteristics of the earlier Mario games. The Mario 8-bit character seen at the level menu in the game and many other details from old games are perhaps a way of appreciation to Miyamoto from the ones that he has worked with.

With Skyward Sword as the earliest saga in Zelda’s history, we know now how Link became the Hero of Time. Miyamoto must have wanted to do this with Zelda before the end of his involvement in major games.

Though it’s great he wants to share his skills with younger generations of game designers and producers, we gamers who have enjoyed his games since the 80s will indeed miss his talent and creativity, for sure.

“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small,” said Miyamoto.

I would love to see Shigeru Miyamoto as himself in other games. A fight against Mario in the next Super Smash Bros. would be priceless.

As the creator of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda and other well-known characters, he deserves our utmost respect.

Thanks for the memories, Shigeru Miyamoto! You are the Hero of Our Time and Forever.

“Dentro de nuestra oficina he estado diciendo ‘me voy a retirar, me voy a retirar’.

[English]

On the same night Microsoft makes a big update available for its Xbox 360 consoles, Nintendo does it as well. The Nintendo 3DS update comes with 3D video-recording capabilities, a new app called Nintendo Zone, and new content on StreetPass Mii Plaza (including a sequel to Find Mii).

Once the update is installed, the camera app will take a bit longer to open up, but only on the first try. This app has to be used while at certain participating places, meaning, next time you go out, take your 3DS with you. To record videos in 3D, open the camera app and select the video-camera icon.

With Nintendo Zone (now available for everyone’s 3DS), users can get exclusive videos, previews and offers at selected locations (like McDonalds or BestBuy).

In StreetPass Mii Plaza, you can get Congratulations! messages for many of your achievements (examples: have  50 Mii characters in your plaza, met Mii characters from five different regions or two different countries, made it through a room in Find Mii, etc.). Also, a music player, slide show, StreetPass map, and accomplishments show up as new features in the app.

The Nintendo eStore was under maintenance at the time of writing of this post. Nintendo eShop is currently undergoing maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please try again later.
(Update: The Nintendo eStore is back to normal since this morning).

There are many more things to do now with a Nintendo 3DS.

Square Enix: “Final Fantasy XIII-2″ – Japanese TV Commercial

[English]
It’s the most recent TV commercial aired in Japan. With only nine more days for its release, fans must be very anxious to play this sequel. For many gamers, FFXIII was a very linear game and some were not happy about this, while it wasn’t much of a deal for most . Other gamers said there wasn’t much of an opportunity for a side-quest, something that involves exploration, an important feature of role-playing games. Let’s hope FFXIII-2 gets to fulfill the expectations of lots of gamers.

Full Sail x Univ. of Florida: Universities unite for educational collaboration

If you are a Capcom gamer of the Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 kind, you know I’m not referring to a match between Full Sail and UF. Two top universities in the state of Florida unite with the purpose of establishing a liaison that could help many students continue with their education from one place to another. Students will have far more options to continue with their study of preference. Both institutions still need to work on the details to make sure students get to meet the requirements for each program.

From: Full Sail University

Full Sail University and University of Florida endorse educational collaboration

Dec. 2, 2011

Winter Park, Fla. — The University of Florida and Full Sail University boards have endorsed a collaboration to create more educational and career opportunities for students at both schools in media, technology and entertainment business.

The collaboration will, among other things, make it easier for students who graduate with certain degrees at one institution to have access to the next level of degree program at the other institution. It also will help clear the way for co-promotion of such degree and certificate programs, with the aim of establishing Central and North Central Florida as a national leader for entertainment business and technology.

“It just makes sense for institutions to share their assets in order to benefit their students,” Machen said. “UF and Full Sail each have fields in which they excel. Why not make it easier for students to have the best of both worlds?”

Full Sail President Garry Jones called the collaboration “a fantastic new chapter in the histories of both universities.”

“This is truly exciting,” Jones said. “Our schools have so much to offer each other, and the best part is that the students at both our institutions will be the big winners.”

The project initially would focus on sports, business, computer game development and engineering, animation, and education degree and certificate programs.

UF colleges that have expressed interest in the plan include Journalism and Communications, Fine Arts, Business Administration, Health and Human Performance, Education and Engineering.

Founded in 1979, Full Sail offers over 30 master’s, bachelor’s and associate degree programs with an emphasis in many areas related to entertainment and media. Its enrollment is more than 15,000.

The collaboration is part of what Machen calls the university’s Accelerated Market Priorities. AMPs, as they are called, will be a series of initiatives aimed at making the university more responsive to the needs of the job market.

“As I’ve said before, we consider economic development to be a university mission equal in importance to research, education and service,” Machen said. “AMPs make it possible for us to respond quickly to rapidly changing markets.”

A time frame for the collaboration has not been established. The plan calls for several measures to be met. Those include ensuring that each institution’s admissions process and standards are met by students admitted to its degree programs, and each institution’s degree and accreditation requirements are met for degrees earned with courses taken at both institutions, according to the resolution trustees approved.

About the University of Florida

The University of Florida is one of the nation’s largest public universities.  A member of the Association of American Universities, UF receives more than $619 million annually in sponsored research funding.  Through its research and other activities, UF contributes more than $8.76 billion a year to Florida’s economy and has a total employment impact of more than 100,000 jobs statewide. www.ufl.edu.  University of Florida Research; Working for Florida.

About Full Sail University:

Full Sail University is an award-winning educational leader for those pursuing careers in the entertainment and media industry. Founded in 1979, Full Sail has been recognized as one of the Top Five Game Degree Programs by Electronic Gaming Monthly, one of the Best Music Programs by Rolling Stone Magazine, and one of the Best Film Programs by UNleashed Magazine. In 2011, Full Sail received the “21st Century Best Practices in Distance Learning Award” from the United States Distance Learning Association, was named the “School/College of the Year” by the Florida Association of Postsecondary Schools and Colleges, and was recognized as one of the Top 100 Social Media Colleges by Studentadvisor.com.

XENOBLADE CHRONICLES COMING TO NINTENDO’S WII CONSOLE IN SPRING

Dec. 2, 2011

It’s man vs. machine in a new game coming to Nintendo’s Wii™ console in spring. Xenoblade Chronicles™ asks players to use the Monado blade to take on a seemingly endless series of invading Mechon robots in a sweeping role-playing adventure.

The main character is Shulk, a weapons researcher who must confront the Mechon by wielding the ancient Monado blade. It’s the only weapon that has any effect against the Mechon, and it also enables Shulk to see the future.

Players can customize their characters with a variety of weapons and armor choices, as well as headgear, boots and gloves. As in many role-playing games, players can then gain experience and upgrade their characters. Players can watch their enemies, learn their tactics and unleash real-time counterattacks.

The vast open world of Xenoblade Chronicles is ripe for exploration. Players can avert their focus from the main story and venture out looking for other challenges and side quests. Hidden areas and unique monsters are scattered throughout the game’s massive world, which players can explore freely.

Xenoblade Chronicles has already launched in Japan and Europe, and has received unanimously positive reviews, including several perfect scores.

Xenoblade Chronicles will be available exclusively through U.S. GameStop retail locations,http://www.gamestop.com and http://www.nintendo.com at a suggested retail price of $49.99 in the United States. Additional information about the game will be announced in the future. For more information, visit http://xenobladechronicles.nintendo.com.
