I remember how popular Geocities was way back then. I even had an account on it. In the late 90s, it was as much fun (in other ways, for sure) as Facebook is nowadays; it was one of the top main sites to go to online. Many people, including myself, learned HTML and Javascript when Netscape and Internet Explorer were battling for the #1 browser position. At GeoCities, your page “lived” in a city. Whatever you did at your “home” was yours. It was the beginning of sharing your interests with others of similar taste. Life goes on, of course, and the Internet changed. Many disappointments occurred during the dot-com times. The purchase of GeoCities by Yahoo for only $3+ billion brought problems to many users and to the company itself. The end of the neighborhoods made people upset. Yahoo’s statement about owning everything on the sites, including people’s own content and images, made people even more upset (to later retract its decision). The premium web hosting service, created by Yahoo due to financial loss, became the beginning of the end for GeoCities. Many free services were affected. Some benefits were limited. People stared to abandon their “homes.” It was no longer “cool.” It was not even a shadow of its grand days. After all these years, Yahoo has decided to close down the service (at the end of the year). GeoCities users will leave their “homes” for good. No more new accounts are currently available. Everyone at GeoCities should prepare to move out. But at least we have more places to make our own sites now like Webs.com or BraveNet. Yahoo will continue to host sites just for small businesses, but it costs $. Of course, you can also get your own blog here on WordPress . Recuerdo yo qué tan popular era GeoCities en ese entonces. Hasta yo tenía una cuenta ahí. A finales de los 90, era tan divertido (en otras maneras, claro) como Facebook lo es hoy en día; era uno de los mejores sitios principales donde ir en la red. Mucha gente, incluyendo yo, aprendió HTML y Javascript cuando Netscape y Internet Explorer estaban luchando por la posición número 1 de los navegadores.  En GeoCities, ustedes “vivían” en una ciudad. Lo que sea que hiciesen en tu “hogar” era de ustedes. Fue el comienzo de compartir los intereses de uno con otros de gusto similar. La vida continua claro, y el Internet cambió. Varias desiluciones ocurrieron durante los tiempos “dot-com”. La compra de GeoCities por Yahoo a solamente más de $3.000 millones trajop problemas a mucos usuarios a la compañía en sí. El fín de los vecindarios enojó a la gente. Las declaraciones de Yahoo acerca de ser dueño de todo en las páginas, incluyendo el cotenido propio e imágenes de la gente, hizo que la gente se enoje aún más (para luego retirar su decisión). El servicio “premium” de alojamientos de sitios web, creado por Yahoo debido a perdidas financieras, se convirtió en el comienzo del fín para GeoCities. Varios servicios gratis fueron afectados. Algunos benefecios fueron limitados. La gente comenzó a abandonar sus “hogares”. Ya no era más “cool”. Ya ni era una sombra de sus grandes días. Después de todoes estos años, Yahoo ha decidido en clausurar su servicio (a fín de año). Los usuarios de GeoCities dejarán sus “hogares” definitivamente. No más nuevas cuentas disponibles. Todos en GeoCities tendrán que prepararse para mudarse. Pero por lo menos tenemos otros lugares donde hacer nuestros sitios ahora como Webs.com o BraveNet. Yahoo continuará alojando sitios web solo para pequeños negocios, pero cuesta $. Claro, ustedes también pueden obtener su propio “blog” aquí en WordPress .
